TEIXERA R (2003) A breeding record of red-necked Grebe Podiceps grisegena on the Groote Meer in 2002. LIMOSA 76 (1): 23-24.
In June 2002 a pair of Red-necked Grebes
was observed on the Groote Meer, western
Noord-Brabant, The Netherlands. One of the
birds was in normal breeding plumage, but the
other was obviously duller coloured. They built
a nest and the dull coloured bird was seen
breeding regularly. On 23 June at least one
white egg was seen. On 6 and 13 July the nest
was gone, but the pair remained on the same
spot. The brightly coloured bird sometimes
gave the advertising call. From 23 June on a
third, regularly calling individual in breeding
plumage was seen in the neighbourhood. No
contact between this individual and the pair
was observed, but on 6 July it had a conflict
with a Great Crested Grebe breeding on the
lake. This is the southernmost confirmed case
of breeding of the Red-necked Grebe in The
Netherlands.
